Broadneck Battle of the Books is a high-energy trivia event that promotes literacy, teamwork, and friendly competition between the Broadneck cluster schools. Here's a quick run-down:
Students in 5th grade will form teams of 3 to 5, and will work together to read a curated list of 10-12 books. Books are a mix of on, below, and above grade-level.
Teams prepare (with the help of a parent and/or student coach) for questions that could be asked during the quiz bowl. Anything in the books is fair game.
After the teams prepare, all teams will gather during the school day during April or May at Broadneck High School for the Battle of the Books!
The Battle will have three rounds, a mascot dance-off, music, and tons of FUN!
Reinforce reading comprehension, retention, critical thinking, and collaborative problem-solving through structured preparation and academic competition.
Leverage team-based learning and school spirit to increase enthusiasm for reading and encourage participation from a broad range of students.
Create early connections between elementary schools, fostering a stronger sense of shared community across the feeder system.
Students work together, compete as a team, discover new books, and build confidence along the way. It gives kids a chance to connect over stories, cheer each other on, and experience reading as something fun, social, and exciting.
At its core, the event is about creating positive experiences around books — and helping students see themselves as readers.
