No. Participation is completely optional.
It can be, but it does not have to be.
Some schools may choose to organize Battle of the Books through an existing club or enrichment structure, while others may use open sign-ups or another flexible format.
Each school determines its own team formation process. Teams may be formed through sign-ups, teacher recommendations, club participation, or another school-based process. Regardless of how teams are formed, all teams must submit the registration form on this website to be part of the Broadneck Battle of the Books.
Teams should include at least three students. Teams can be no larger than five students.
Yes. Schools are encouraged to have as many teams as possible register for Broadneck Battle of the Books.
Absolutely — we want Battle of the Books to feel fun, social, and welcoming.
Whenever possible, schools are encouraged to allow students to form teams with friends or classmates they work well with. Part of what makes Battle of the Books special is the opportunity for students to read, prepare, and compete together as a team.
That said, final team structures may depend on registration numbers, coach availability, and each school’s process.
The event includes competition, but the primary goal is creating a positive and memorable literacy experience.
That’s completely normal. Battle of the Books is designed to be supportive, collaborative, and encouraging. Teams work together, and students are never expected to perform alone.
