Thank you for helping bring the Broadneck Battle of the Books to life. Coaches are the heart of this program — helping students build confidence, strengthen teamwork, and discover the fun of reading together.
Here are some quick tips for coaching Battle of the Books teams.

Work with student's families to set up a consistent meeting schedule and share it with students and families early.
A regular routine helps teams stay organized and avoids last-minute cramming before the event.
Meet virtually when in-person meetings are not feasible.
Be strategic. Many teams divide books among members so each student can become a “book expert.”
Even when books are assigned, encourage students to read as many titles as possible. The strongest teams usually have multiple students (at least two) familiar with each book.
Tracking tools, reading charts, or shared checklists can help teams stay on pace. Check the Resources section for printable and electronic tools for teams.
Encourage students to keep track of:
Main characters
Important events
Settings
Key quotes
Major plot twists
Illustrations or visuals
Some teams use notebooks, sticky notes, sketches, or poster boards to organize ideas.
One of the best ways to prepare is through mock battles and practice games.
Teams can:
Write practice questions
Quiz each other
Run timed rounds
Hold trivia competitions
Practice answering with both the title and author
Make sure every student gets opportunities to participate during practice.
Before competition day, make sure students understand:
How questions are asked
Time limits
Scoring procedures
Team expectations
Sportsmanship guidelines
Knowing what to expect helps students feel more confident during the event.
Winning is exciting — but Battle of the Books is really about teamwork, effort, and creating a positive experience.
Encourage students to:
Support teammates
Respect other teams
Stay positive
Compete fairly
Celebrate participation and growth
A great Battle team is not just prepared — it’s encouraging, respectful, and collaborative.
